Evelyn Underhill’s Travels in France and Italy

Led by Rev Dr Ayla Lepine. Ayla will reflect on Evelyn Underhill’s travel journals and sketchbooks, making connections between pilgrimage, spirituality, and visual art. Across Europe, Underhill’s early journeys created opportunities for encountering centres of prayer and sacred beauty in Venice, Siena, Chartres, and beyond. There will be opportunities for discussion, visio divina prayer, and contemplative space.

Ayla Lepine is Associate Rector at St James's Piccadilly. Originally from Canada, she has a PhD from the Courtauld Institute of Art and an MPhil in Theology from Cambridge University. She publishes widely in theology and the arts and is a Visiting Fellow at King’s College London. She served her curacy at Hampstead Parish Church, which is the resting place of Evelyn Underhill. Ayla has led study days, talks and retreats on Underhill’s travels and visual art. She is the author of the book Women, Art, God, published by SCM Press.
